Regarding the 9-11 memorial suggested by our lovely secretary

Hey everyone it's Jen from the AQ Republicans:

I just wanted to thank everyone who came to our first meeting, it was a wonderful turnout and I know we are all very excited to kick the year off!!

I also wanted to let everyone know something else. I always do something for September 11th because it deeply impacted me and in years previous to my holding the vigil AQ didn't really do a whole lot to remember that fateful day. However, this year the college is really stepping it up and are doing a few things to remember 9/11 (Monday). There is a prayer at 9pm in the chapel which I encourage you all to go to and they are showing Flight 93 in the Moose at 10:30pm. I don't want to discourage anyone from going to either of those two events because they are both doing what I do every year (a vigil and then watching a film to remember the day) so therefore I am not holding my own candlelight vigil. As long as the AQ campus has some way to remember 9/11 that is all that matters. I encourage you to go to the prayer and to the Moose for the film.

ABC will also be airing "The Road to 911" on the 10th (tomarrow) and the 11th. Should be factually more accurate than "Ferenheight 9-11." (Though the creator has specifically said he doesn't want his film regarded as just a conservative version of Moore's "film." (Quotes added by webmistress.))

So yeah, show up for what you can, and even if you can't make any events, please just take a moment to pray, reflect, meditate, what have you. =-)

New School Year

Alright, the AQ GOP had its first meeting of the new academic term today. Discussed volunteer opprotunities and the like. And I swear I'll maintain the darn page this semester. =-P I might expand this into a full-out page in Google Pages, but this'll do for now.

For anyone interested in going to the Right to Life march this January, I'll have info on that as soon as I can.

Our first meeting is officially going to be held UPSTAIRS in the Moose Cafe Sept. 7th (Wed) at 12:30 PM. I need all officers to contact me IMMEDIATELY and tell me who are etc... It seems I never got that somewhat important information. :-P We will have pizza and pop, but feel free to bring munchies to share with everyone too. ^_^-"Because sharing is good" We're going to discuss our plans for this year, set up a schedule, hand out T-shirts and discuss some events that are taking place in the immediate future. Oh yes, we'll be eating pizza too. ;-) All are welcome to join, but only registered members get T-shirts. Sorry.

I assume that most of you would love to take this oppurtunity to goto Mackinac so if anyone is seriously interested just let me know and I'll try to get as many tickets as possible for those interested. To make it fair it is 1st come 1st serve. So if you are checking the blog daily your chances of being the first responder are much better. ;-)

Finally, we're going to need at least 1 person to run the booth on Club and Orgs day from 1:15-3:00 because the rest of us have class and Heaven forbid I miss another exciting Humanities class. Anyone who has some time on their hands and wants to help the club grow this year can volunteer. Once again, just email me and give me a heads up. If you're not sure, feel free to drop in and relieve someone occassionally.

Our advisor for this year is once again, Woody Hoover, a very inspiring and well-rounded guy I must say. If anyone else is interested in becoming a moderator for the blog, email me.

Tsk tsk. This guy sounds more like a Libertarian with that kind of talk. See, its the extremist additudes like that which started this whole mess. The whole aim of terrorists is to do exactly what this misguided Congressman would like to do: Fan the flames of war! No Mr. Tancredo, thats not the way to win this war. That is just STUPID. Now I have my opinions about how Islam is not a religion of peace and love per say, but there are plenty of Muslims in the world who are peaceful and loving enough. Bombing a terrorist camp is a lot different than bombing Mecca! Bombing Saudi Arabia would be less offensive than bombing Mecca! You would enrage all of the Muslims in the entire world doing that! I know if somebody bombed the Vatican, I'd be devastated and I'm not sure if I'd be able to keep my tempers from flaring. However, the Muslim faith has far less reservations about revenge and warfare in general than Christianity does, so you're just asking for trouble there.

Oh boy. How is this guy in elected office when he is so ignorant? I'm ashamed he's in my party to be honest, which is why I'm writing out against him. This isn't what the GOP or Americans or anybody should be representing! The only way to snub terrorism is to either kill the terrorists (since they don't seem to mind dying for their cause) or change their minds by sending a strong message that the real enemy is the hate within them. Mr. Tancredo, you are NOT sending that message. We already WERE attacked 4 years ago if you recall and we did not lash out against the innocent with nuclear warfare as many of us felt like doing at the time. President Bush kept a clear head (although he also was quoted as saying, "I wanna kick some @$$") and went after Bin Laden and his cronies with restrained force (although I still think frying Torra Borra would have solved a few problems...). And why, Mr. Congressman, are you in Florida bantering on about what the President should do like you're some sort of spokesman? Go back to Colorado, shut up, sit down, make laws that will help people and get to work!

Never say we aren't willing to help an editorial subject in distress, and Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm clearly needs some friendly advice.

Last month the state legislature buried the Democratic Governor's top legislative priority, a grandiose proposal to raise taxes on insurance companies, banks and thousands of small businesses that private studies said would have cost up to 20,000 jobs. Ms. Granholm's plan was widely criticized, including in these columns in March and in an op-ed article on the opposite page last Thursday by state legislator Rick Baxter, a Republican, and Hillsdale College Professor Gary Wolfram.

Ms. Granholm was not pleased, going so far as to denounce the op-ed as "treasonous for the state of Michigan." The authors' high crime? Exposing Michigan as a high tax state and criticizing Ms. Granholm for wanting to raise taxes. Her choice of words was no inadvertent slip of the tongue, by the way--a Howard Dean-like temporary loss of sanity. The Governor has used the "t" word repeatedly and has even suggested that Mr. Baxter "should be removed from office."

Well, we recall that the first time an American was accused of "treason" for opposing high taxes was when New Englanders dressed as Indians and dumped tea in Boston Harbor. And it was America's most famous tax protester, Patrick Henry, who declared: "If this be treason, make the most of it." Ms. Granholm was born in Canada so maybe she missed this American history.

Sorry to say, the facts laid out in Messrs. Baxter and Wolfram's column and in our previous editorial are well-established. When it comes to high taxes, the Wolverine State ranks fifth both in per-capita terms and as a share of personal income. Michigan also has the nation's highest unemployment rate. There is no shortage of studies that have linked these two phenomena.

More troubling about Ms. Granholm's recent combustion is that she seems to believe that the problem is that the rest of the world will find out about Michigan's high taxes, not the high taxes themselves. But Michigan's inhospitable tax climate is hardly a state secret, especially to the state residents and businesses who have to endure it.

Not so long ago, Ms. Granholm was regarded as the rising star of the Democratic Party--innovative, articulate, and attractive--and some even talked of changing the Constitution so she could run for President (perhaps against Austrian-born Arnold Schwarzenegger). But her latest public approval ratings have hit the skids while her legislative agenda lies in shambles. She's now off to Japan in a quest to "bring jobs and businesses to Michigan," and her latest complaint is that her task has been undermined by a global business newspaper--The Wall Street Journal--"bad-mouthing the state."

Let us be clear: No one would like to see a robust economic recovery in Michigan more than we would. If Governor Granholm were selling a message of cutting taxes, not raising them, her job would be a lot easier and she'd be in a lot less agitated state of mind.

Seriously though, its dissapointing and worrisome to see so many people in leadership jump the gun and get all hysterical about common issues like this. (Yes, this is not just limited to the Democrats unfortunately. Arnie has his problems to a certain degree. Girly men? Sorry Governator, thats just too corny for politics.) Michigan's issues are no laughing matter, but they certainly don't warrant defining divided opinion as rebellion against the government. What they SHOULD warrant is genuine concern for those in disagreement, because obviously not everyone's voice is being taken into account.

Don't ignore your citizens Gov. Granholm! They are trying to tell you something!

On a side note, I still haven't gotten a reply to all those letters I keep sending her. Hmmm...

An important time of change!

As you all may be aware, I'm a huge Star Wars nut. You know how Anakin was made a Jedi to bring balance to the force? Well, the Reagan administration had a similar experience. They appointed a judge who they believed was on strong moral ground and would restore the value of our Constitutional and Humane right to life. Sadly, that judge turned to the Dark Side and abandoned the cause. But now is a time for a New Hope!

Yes, no pussyfooting around it, the resignation of Sandra Day O'Connor leaves the almost evenly split Supreme Court open for someone who can tip the scales! The Republicans have lists of names and the Democrats have lists of rebuttles. There is sure to be a lot of arguing before anything even happens. However, for those of you who feel as strongly as I do that this issue goes deeper than politics I urge you to join me and other Pro-lifers in prayer for those who are really depending on a change of face during this time of transition. As the issue is re-open, we should use this as a time to show others our appreciation for life (and make them realize that they too already have a value for life that they just don't fully understand yet) rather than further divide ourselves on the issue. Sometimes in our world, having a life is mistaken for having life.

The unborn, unwed mothers, families living paycheck to paycheck, those who have been abused, and those who have been abandoned are the ones who must live with the consequences of Americans who struggle between putting value on life and value on their lifestyles. It is very important for us as active members of the Republican party to be aware and vocal of the political ramifications of possible nominations and be ready to defend Bush's choice, but we do not go forward to blindly praise the appointed. I think you'll agree, we can see it coming a mile away. We must be aware of the real reasons of our cause and why we will stand by Bush's choice. There are times when we must step back from partisanism and look at the core of our values. We will support President George W. Bush's nominee not just because he said so, but because we know that he shares our concern for the value of life. He has done so much more to support the value of life in America than any other President. John Kerry certainly wouldn't have put "rights for the unborn" at the top of his priorities if he was President right now and had to choose a new Justice. Thank God that is not the case.

Still, its important that we pray for the President, because there are still a lot of other important deciding factors to be made that will have a resounding affect on American laws possibly for decades to come. Illegalizing abortion alone will not stop the suffering completley. Bringing the truth to light in the public eye is the only way to improve the American culture. There are no garuntees except with God. So during this time I hope we can come together, pray because we are thankful for this time of hope, that God's will be done, and so that all may come to understand the value of life in all of its forms.

As you may have heard, Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor has just
resigned her position. Justice O'Connor was frequently the deciding vote in 5-4 decisions. Please pray for Mrs. O'Connor and her family in this difficult time.

With her resignation, a Supreme Court vacancy has been created. We have every
confidence that President Bush will appoint a nominee who will exercise the
restraint necessary to judges to strictly apply the Constitution rather than
write new policies into it. Even so, we know that as you are reading this, the White House is being flooded with calls regarding the vacancy. Even if President Bush is predisposed to nominate a judge who recognizes the many levels on which Roe was wrongly decided, it is extremely difficult for politicians to withstand pressure that is heavily against their inclinations.

How important is this nomination? The Supreme Court is currently divided 6-3 in favor of Roe. This is an opportunity to gain an anti-Roe seat on the Supreme Court and replace Ms. O'Connor with a strict constructionist who will apply the Constitution rather than rewrite it.

That is why I am writing to you now. We need as many pro-lifers as possible to contact the White House about the vacancy. Please call the White House
Comment Line at (202) 456-1111 and tell President Bush that you strongly agree
with his view that Justices on the Court should not write law, but apply it.
You may also contact the President via e-mail at president@whitehouse.gov or by fax at 202-456-2461. Because time is of the essence, it is best to use one or more of these methods of communication, as mail will likely be too late to have a serious impact on the decision. Please also forward this to all of your pro-life friends and relatives. Any given call could mean the difference between protecting women and children in three years and not protecting them for decades to come.

Leftmedia is using its print and TV monopoly to advance its dedicated
and relentless prosecution of "extremists on the political right" --

work to make ends meet, and unless you are independently wealthy,
that includes you. The Kyoto treaty threatens millions of existing
and potential U.S. jobs. As we noted in Patriot No. 05-16, "The
Orwellian Kyoto Protocol hamstrings Western industrialized nations but
exempts socialist states like India and China. (It should be noted that
the U.S. Senate resoundingly rejected Al Gore's beloved Kyoto Protocol
in 1997 by 95-0.)" China and India will run over the U.S. economy,
while we inhale their emissions. Explosive growth in these two nations
largely explains why gas prices are above $2 and will remain high.

Top of the fold -- The Earth Day
Before Yesterday

Today marks the 35th anniversary of the founding of "Earth Day" by
former Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson. It's also V.I. Lenin's birthday
-- which is no coincidence. Nelson modeled his anti-capitalist protests
after anti-Vietnam War demonstrations of that era. Today, the so-called
"environmental movement" he helped spawn has devolved from a gaggle of
unwashed adolescent peaceniks into a slick cadre of leftists, lobbyists
and lawyers. The result of this devolution has been an enormous hidden
tax on American products and services -- more than a trillion
dollars last year -- in the form of runaway environmental regulation.

The populist wing of the environmental movement now operates
under the aegis of the Left's cult of Latter Day Eco-theologists, or
earth-worshippers. Their current titular head is Albert Arnold Gore,
he of the unfortunately timed "global warming" speech delivered in
January, 2004, during the coldest day in New York City in decades.

The objective of the earth-worshippers is to create a central
authority over industrial production in the West through mechanisms
like the Orwellian Kyoto Treaty. Their method is to portray industrial
atmospheric emissions as a primary determinant of global climate. Their
goal, consistent with both Nelson and Lenin, is to crush or at least
bridle free-enterprise capitalism. The Kyoto Protocol, for example,
hamstrings Western industrialized nations but exempts socialist
states like India and China. (It should be noted that the U.S. Senate
resoundingly rejected Al Gore's beloved Kyoto Protocol in 1997 by way
of the Byrd-Hagel Resolution. The vote count? An eye-popping 95-0.)

Commenting on the misuse of science to support political agendas,
Harvard's Dr. Malcolm Ross concludes of such folly, "Freeze or fry,
the problem is always industrial capitalism, and the solution is always
international socialism." Colorado Environmental Studies Professor Roger
Pielke adds, "It is clear that there is an ample supply of people willing
to use concern over the politicization of science as a political bludgeon
to score points on the Bush Administration [but] where are the analysts
(including reporters) who care about the politicization of science?"

Of course, most reporters are not journalists, but Leftmedia lemmings
leading the charge to politicize science, particularly environmental
science.

As with other Leftist cadres, Eco-theologists have learned well the
value of co-opting media outlets to influence public opinion. Their most
recent big-screen entry, "The Day After Tomorrow," was strategically
released just prior to last year's presidential election. The movie,
a ridiculously overblown fantasy about global warming, suggests that
the consequences of such warming might be the rapid development of an
Ice Age, and that all the Chicken Littles should take note.

The movie was marketed as "fact-based fiction," but it played so
loose with the facts that it could have passed for a Michael Moore
crockumentary. National Geographic asked Tom Prugh, senior editor at
the Worldwatch Institute, for comment, and he noted, "Like some other
Hollywood movies that claim to be based on true stories, there's a
kernel of truth that is then pumped full of steroids and given cosmetic
surgery. ... It has been 'Hollywoodized'."

Daniel Schrag, Professor of Geochemistry at Harvard University,
agrees: "It's really science fiction." But Dr. Schrag adds, "Global
warming is definitely a real thing."

Indeed, most climate scientists agree that there has been roughly
a one-degree rise in the earth's surface temperature in the last
century. (Detractors argue that the rise is because many sensing stations
are in urban areas (which tend to be hotter) or from geothermal or
solar changes.)

If one accepts that the earth is warming, the question them becomes,
why? Many scientists believe that the burning of fossil fuels (coal,
oil and gas) may be a contributing factor, although that opinion is far
from unanimous. Of the 930 major papers and studies on global warming in
the last ten years, approximately 75 percent conclude that the so-called
"greenhouse emissions" from those fuels act like a thermal blanket
trapping heat in the atmosphere and warming the planet.

Significantly, of course, 25 percent of those papers did not
draw any such conclusion. To that end, the Oregon Institute of Science
and Medicine obtained more than 17,100 signatures from basic and applied
American scientists on a petition noting, "There is no convincing
scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane or
other greenhouse gasses is causing or will, in the foreseeable future,
cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of
the Earth's climate."

For real insights into ice ages and global warming, one should
disregard "The Day After Tomorrow" and consider the earth, day before
yesterday, a far better predictor of future meteorological trends.

There is evidence of dramatic climate changes in the last 13,000
years, with severe cooling occurring 8,200 and 12,700 years ago, followed
by re-warming. Some scientists suggest that these changes are related to
the changing distance and position between Earth and the sun. To wit,
even a 2001 National Academy of Sciences report on global warming
suggests that increased radiation from the sun may be responsible
for much of the climate change in the last century. In other words,
our planet's sole source of heat -- an enormous thermonuclear fireball
around which our earth orbits -- may actually have something to do with
modest temperature variation. Imagine that!

Regarding human impact on global temperature, William Ruddiman,
professor emeritus of environmental sciences at the University of
Virginia, notes in the March edition of Scientific American that the
earliest humans may have influenced the global climate: "New evidence
suggests that concentrations of CO2 started rising about 8,000 years
ago, [and] some 3,000 years later the same thing happened to methane,
another heat-trapping gas. ... Without them, current temperatures in
northern parts of North America and Europe would be cooler by three
to four degrees Celsius -- enough to make agriculture difficult. In
addition, an incipient ice age -- marked by the appearance of small
ice caps -- would probably have begun several thousand years ago in
parts of northeastern Canada. Instead the earth's climate has remained
relatively warm and stable in recent millennia."

According to Ruddiman's theory, early human cultivation may be why
we are not in the midst of an ice age.

This weekend, eco-wackos will be saturating the media outlets with
apocalyptic warnings about global warming, mostly rolling out Hollywonk
elitists like Daryl Hannah, whose press release claims she "uses solar
power, adopts animals, drives a clean burning vehicle that runs on
biodiesel, and lives a sustainable lifestyle." Isn't that special!

Indeed, global temperature has been a hot topic since
the first Earth Day, but earth-worshipers forgot what they
said the day before yesterday. The warning then concerned

Complex environmental concerns are serious -- and, accordingly,
should be taken seriously, but mindless Eco-theological rhetoric serves
only to keep us from getting at the truth. As environmental analyst
Rich Trzupek notes, "The golden rule among environmental groups is
'never, ever admit that progress has been achieved -- especially when
Republicans are in power.' It's awfully tough for those organizations
to raise money if donors aren't kept in a constant state of panic."

This Earth Day, we encourage Patriots to plant a seed of truth that
it may bear fruit in the coming debate.

News from the Swamp...

In the Executive Branch, President Bush signed the bankruptcy reform
bill into law this week, adding another victory for the Republican
agenda. This act makes it more difficult for individuals to file for
bankruptcy and duck out of paying their creditors. Bush also continued
his tour of states on behalf of Social Security reform, taking his appeal
for personal accounts to South Carolina, the home state of Senator
Lindsey Graham. Graham has asked the President to be more specific on
benefit cuts and possible tax increases which may arise to meet the
transition costs.

In the Senate, it has now come down to who's going to blink first
over the status of President Bush's judicial nominees. The Senate
Judiciary Committee approved by party-line vote Texas judge Priscilla
Owen and California judge Janice Rogers Brown, passing them on to the
full Senate for a confirmation vote. Both nominees for the Appeals
Court, Brown and Owen were filibustered during Bush's first term,
but he re-nominated them in November after his re-election.

Demos have threatened to filibuster both nominees, calling them
too extreme (read: too respectful of the Constitution). If they do,
Majority Leader Frist is prepared to exercise the constitutional
option and change parliamentary rules to bar filibustering of judicial
confirmations. Frist stated this week that he would not attempt to
extend the ban to include filibusters on legislation. But judgeship
nominees deserve an up-or-down vote rather than the stalling tactics
that the Demos have resorted to of late, and a change in parliamentary
procedure would assure just that.

Minority Leader Harry Reid has threatened to bring Senate business
to a screeching halt if the ban on filibusters goes through. It's hard
to know what purpose such a childish move would serve, other than to
prove further how obstructionist the Democrats really are and how they
have no real agenda to lead the country.

In other Senate news, a provision to give amnesty to nearly a
million illegal aliens working in agricultural jobs, debated Tuesday,
failed to pass. The provision was attached to an $81-billion emergency
supplemental-appropriations bill to pay for fighting the wars in Iraq
and Afghanistan, which later passed in the Senate sans the immigration
provision. Debates over unlawful immigration will surely continue as
the two chambers begin the work of reconciling their respective versions
of the bill.

In the House, Democrats refuse to allow Tom DeLay to have his day
before the House Ethics Committee. Republicans instituted rule changes
recently, among them the automatic dismissal of an ethics complaint if
no action is taken within 45 days. Rep. Doc Hastings, chairman of the
committee, offered to extend that period to 90 days, but the Demos just
aren't buying. Clearly they fear that if DeLay actually gets a hearing,
he'll be exonerated. Regardless of party affiliation, it is patently
unfair to accuse someone of violating rules and then not allow him to
defend himself in the proper forum.

Of considerable note, Illinois Rep. Henry Hyde, chair of the House
International Relations Committee and longtime Reagan Republican,
announced his retirement this week. First sworn into the House of
Representatives in 1975, Hyde will complete his current congressional
term, which expires in 2006.

New and notable legislation: The House voted this week to approve
oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (HR 6) -- a measure
the Senate recently approved. An Online Freedom of Speech bill was
proposed simultaneously in the House (HR 1605 and HR 1606) and Senate
(S 678) that aims to prevent federal regulation of political speech
over the Internet. The United Nations Voting Accountability Act, which
was proposed in the House, would prohibit foreign aid to countries that
act in opposition to the United States in the UN.

From the Left...

Vermont Senator Jumpin' Jim Jeffords, the Republican turncoat
who fancies himself an Independent, announced that he will not be
seeking re-election next year. Jeffords will be stepping down after
three terms as an annoying RINO. Few were surprised in 2001 when Tom
Daschle convinced him to leave the Republican Party, ending the GOP's
razor-thin majority status.

Vermont's only representative in the House, Bernie Sanders, a
Socialist who disingenuously calls himself an Independent, will run
for Jeffords's seat, but there is a strong alternative.

Readers may recall that last fall The Patriot endorsed
Republican candidate, retired USAF officer and Friend of The
Patriot Greg Parke for the seat occupied by Jeffords. With the
announcement of Jeffords' retirement, Parke is gearing up to campaign
for the seat again, but his first battle will be to convince Republican
leaders that the contest is worth the money it will take to win. The
addition of just one conservative Republican in the Senate would be a
major step toward assuring constitutional treatment of the President's
judicial nominees, and the next three months of his campaign are
crucial. Parke is the man. We reiterate our support for Parke, and

On the National Security front...

John Negroponte gained Senate approval Thursday to become the first
Director of National Intelligence, winning an overwhelming 98-2 vote
for final confirmation. Mr. Negroponte was sworn in at the White House
within 45 minutes of the Senate vote and is a welcome addition to the
intelligence community.

Meanwhile, President Bush's other high-level nominee, John Bolton,
has been tarred by a partisan political brush. Democrats -- true to form
-- are borking Bolton, i.e., making all manner of ugly and irrelevant
charges regarding his qualifications to be Ambassador to the UN. Assorted
former co-workers and subordinates have alleged abusive behavior,
intimidation and the like. Unfortunately, this "oldest political trick
in the book" appears to have suckered at least one Republican senator,
Ohio's George Voinovich, into withholding his "yea" vote. Blindsided
by Voinovich's mutiny, Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Richard
Lugar had little choice but to delay Bolton's committee vote, fearing
a less than positive outcome. In doing so, Lugar has unwittingly given
weight to the allegations and ensured that more will follow. Even former
Secretary of State Powell is alleged to have warned Senators Chaffee and
Hagel that Bolton may be too volatile for the job -- which, in our view,
constitutes a strong endorsement.

From the warfront with Jihadistan...

According to CIA and DIA intelligence reports, Saudi terrorist Osama
bin Laden and Jordanian al-Qa'ida terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi have
obtained, or will soon be in possession of, a fissile weapon. That is
the cautious conclusion by analysts assigned to Zarqawi earlier this
month. Reiterating what both the President and Vice President have said
previously, CIA Director Porter Goss says a nuclear terrorist strike
"may be only a matter of time," emphasizing that there is no absolute
assurance that importation of a fissile weapon can be prevented. In
other words, the best defense is a strong offense -- AKA, the Bush
Doctrine of Pre-Emption.

As The Patriot noted in October, 2002, our well-placed
sources in the Middle East and intelligence sources with the NSA and NRO
estimated that the UN Security Council's foot-dragging provided an ample
window for Saddam to export some or all of his deadliest WMD materials
and components, including one or more crude nuclear devices.

At that time we reported that Allied Forces would be unlikely
to discover Iraq's WMD stores, noting, "Our sources estimate that Iraq
has shipped some or all of its biological stockpiles and nuclear WMD
components through Syria to southern Lebanon's heavily fortified Bekaa
Valley." In December of 2002, our senior-level intelligence sources
re-confirmed estimates that some of Iraq's biological and nuclear
WMD material and components had, in fact, been moved into Syria and
Iran. That movement continued until President Bush finally pulled the
plug on the UN's ruse.

It is not likely that these weapons have moved since, but if Zarqawi
has a nuke, it came out of Iran or Syria, and, according to our sources,
bin Laden has instructed Zarqawi to select a target inside the U.S.

On the Homeland Security front...

There is still plenty of evidence concerning al-Qa'ida sleeper cells
and support clusters in the U.S. waiting for the nation to drop its
guard. Al-Qa'ida sympathizers abound. Case in point: In early April,
FBI agents raided the Memphis home of Rafat Jamal Mawlawi, a Syrian
with dual citizenship, who is suspected of setting up marriages
between Islamists and local women in order to get the men into the
country. The FBI found a large cache of weapons, ammunition, cash,
Moroccan and Bosnian passports, and other items such as pictures of
Mawlawi shouldering a rocket launcher.

This wasn't the first time an Islamist-organized fraud scheme has
been uncovered in Memphis. Back in 2002, five Islamists from New York
were arrested in Memphis when attempting to obtain fake driver's licenses
from a state DoT examiner.

Judicial Benchmarks...

For the second time in three years, U.S. District Judge Leonie
Brinkema has considered a guilty plea from Zacarias Moussaoui, the
only person in the U.S. charged in connection with the September 11
terrorist attacks, and this time the plea may stick. Moussaoui recently
wrote a letter to Judge Brinkema and the U.S. government stating that
he wanted to plead guilty, and according to a courthouse spokesman on
Wednesday afternoon the judge has decided to accept Moussaoui's plea.
Additional details were unavailable, but Judge Brinkema has scheduled
a hearing for Friday in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, Virginia.
Moussaoui could face the death penalty, although his sentence would be
determined at a trial after his plea was accepted.

Moussaoui, indicted on six counts related to 9/11, had tried in 2002
to plead guilty to the four charges carrying the death penalty, saying
at the time that he was a member of al-Qa'ida and had pledged allegiance
to alleged 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden. However, Moussaoui changed
his mind after Brinkema gave him a week to think about it. It's been
a difficult road for the U.S. government to get Moussaoui to trial.
In addition to his originally withdrawn guilty plea, Moussaoui's attempts
to represent himself, conflicts with his court-appointed lawyers, and
repeated appeals over his access to confidential government sources and
al-Qa'ida detainees have further delayed his trial. The Patriot
hopes that this time justice will be served.

From the "Non Compos Mentis" Files...

Two weeks ago, The Patriot noted that the L.A. Times
issued not one, but four corrections to a news story. In a
further correction item this week, the paper said, "At the same time
[as the previous corrections], editors began a full review of the
story.... Based on that inquiry...the paper has concluded that the
article fell far short of Times standards." No kidding! Four new
corrections were issued and the writer was dismissed. Eric Slater, the
"journalist" in question, told the Times, "Myself and my attorney
are looking over the request [for my resignation] and will get back
to the L.A. Times by morning." Friend of The Patriot,
James Taranto, responds: "With his command of grammar, ourselves wonder
how he got hired in the first place."

From the "Village Academic Curriculum" File...

In California, parent Larry Caldwell of Roseville is making a
federal case out of forcing state government schools to follow existing
state laws and policies on science education, as in the "California
State Board of Education Policy on the Teaching of Natural Sciences."
Caldwell proposes a "Quality Science Education Policy" requiring that
scientific theories (including evolution) not be taught dogmatically
and that students be acquainted with debate and rational inquiry over
questions of science. Amazing that school administrators have refused
such a reasonable -- nay, well-needed -- request, eh? The Pacific
Justice Institute will join the case as co-counsel.

Around the nation...

From the states, despite dire threats from Education Secretary
Margaret Spellings, Utah legislators this week voted overwhelmingly in
favor of a bill that would give state-education policy precedent over
President Bush's No Child Left Behind Act. Mrs. Spellings tried to stop
passage of the bill, threatening to withdraw Utah's federal funding for
education. Utah was unimpressed. "I'd just as soon they take the stinking
money and go back to Washington with it," said Rep. Steve Mascaro,
R-West Jordan. "Let us resolve our education problems by ourselves. I
will not be threatened by Washington over $76 million."

The rest of the country would do well to recognize this as a proper
example of federalism at work. Such extra-constitutional federal
mandates have power only insofar as the states choose to depend upon
federal money. When the federal government oversteps its bounds, all
the states need to do is tell Washington to "take the stinking money"
and leave. For the sake of the Constitution, and for the sake of our
children, let's hope other states follow Utah's bold lead.

In business/economic news...

In another setback for the struggling airline industry, US Airways
sold over 1,000 round-trip tickets at a hefty discount over the
weekend. Online customers were quite thrilled to fly in and out of
Asheville, N.C., Jamestown, N.Y. and Hilton Head, S.C. for only $1.86!
Even Travelocity and Orbitz couldn't match that! US Airways has
also had problems such as sending flights off without any baggage from
Philadelphia over Christmas. In August, the company filed for bankruptcy
a second time since 2001. Selling tickets for $1.86 (probably not even
enough to pay for those peanuts!) is a sure way to end up in bankruptcy
a third time.

On the culture front...

Connecticut entered the redefinition-of-marriage fight -- with the
so-called "Constitution State" weighing in on the pro-homosexuality
side. Gov. M. Jodi Rell signed into law creation of "civil unions"
with the mild disclaimer that marriage is retained as a husband-wife
relationship only. This, of course, is yet another erosion -- along
the way to complete erosion -- of the natural-law-based definition of
marriage as the foundation of natural-family formation. As the Left
presses for the normalization of homosexual "marriage," there's no
reason to think the battle will stop here.

Family and faith matters...

While we doubt that Pope Benedict XVI is a country-music fan, we
are fairly confident that his virtual iPod would include Aaron Tippin's
"You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything." That
simple sentiment from a country song epitomizes the core message of
Cardinal Ratzinger's eulogy of Pope John Paul II, along with his first
homilies as the pope. At 78 years of age, Pope Benedict XVI has seen
the carnage wrought by relativism. His experience within Nazi Germany
taught him that institutions devoid of the intellectual commitment of
active souls are a drain on the life of the Church. While he welcomes
home wayward parishioners who can find the Church only on Easter and
Christmas, he champions a dynamic Catholicism that promotes faith with
forethought rather than afterthought.

The Church is at a crossroads, and the mainstream media here and
in Europe would direct the Church down a path of relativism and an
embracing of the diversity and equality of all religions. To be sure,
the new Pope is committed to an "openness to the whole" of history
and of the human race. He seeks a growing vibrant church, but it will
remain a church that stands for serious ideas, one faithful to Scripture,
even if Scripture is unpopular within enlightened circles.

The media of Europe and the United States have been brutally open
in their contempt for the new Pope -- dubbing him "God's Rottweiler"
for his conservative stance and incessantly revisiting his forced
association with the Hitler Youth -- and have consistently misrepresented
both his positions and his likely leadership style. Of course, it's a
good bet that no matter who the College of Cardinals elected via the
intercession of the Almighty, the choice would not make the reporters
happy. Unless, of course, you can imagine a Hugh Hefner papacy.

On the frontiers of science...

Michael Fumento, author of the groundbreaking work The Myth of
Heterosexual AIDS, recently wrote about some interesting developments
out of Africa. A trio of research scientists has worked for years
to dispel the World Health Organization's claim that 99 percent of
AIDS cases in Africa are the result of normal heterosexual relations.
On the contrary, these researchers assert that no more than one-third
of all AIDS cases are contracted through heterosexual intercourse -- and
that believing otherwise is jeopardizing the lives of millions. In the
U.S., only 12 percent of AIDS cases are "attributed to" heterosexual
transmission, meaning the victims claimed to have gotten it that way,
and even those figures (based on other research) seem to be exaggerated.

Contrary to mounting evidence, the WHO asserts that homosexuality is
quite rare in Africa. Unfortunately, it is difficult to challenge the
currently rooted paradigm of heterosexual AIDS spread -- particularly
when the paradigm is sex. "Sex is sexy," says one of the scientists,
who also notes that very few scientists are even looking to other
possibilities. Another of the trio seems to nail the problem on the
head, pointing out that for scientists to concede they're wrong would be
"to admit they're complicit in mass death. That's hard to admit that
to yourself, much less to other people."

On the frontiers of junk science...

The New York Times reports, "[P]eople who are overweight
but not obese have a lower risk of death than those of normal
weight...." implying that fat folks' risk of death is below 100
percent. That error notwithstanding, there is a story here.

According to the latest reports from the CDC, the "obesity
epidemic" isn't. The CDC now ranks obesity No. 7 instead of No. 2
among the nation's leading causes of preventable death. Last year,
the National Center for Health Statistics reported to the CDC that
their mortality figures for obesity were overstated by at least 200
percent. CDC researchers now say that obesity deaths are 14 times lower
than previously estimated. 14 times! In fact, the new CDC report
suggests that being modestly overweight may extend life expectancy.

Who's to say which reports are correct? There's only one sensible
conclusion: The physique-worshipers' play-book is about as accurate as
the one used by the earth worshipers -- and other idolaters.

Oh, and that business about whether red wine is good for your
heart. That one got debunked as well -- researchers now say the
relationship between wine consumption and health is incidental.

And last...

Just in time for Earth Day festivities, California's Supreme Court
told People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to give it a rest.
The Golden State high court declined to review the now-dismissed 2002
lawsuit PETA brought against the California Milk Advisory Board's
ad series revolving around the tag line, "Great cheese comes from
happy cows. Happy cows come from California." A state appeals court
ruled in January that the board, like all state agencies, is immune to
false-advertising suits. Talk about PETA milking a claim....

THE PRESIDENT: Laura and I offer our congratulations to Pope Benedict XVI. He's a man of great wisdom and knowledge. He's a man who serves the Lord. We remember well his sermon at the Pope's funeral in Rome, how his words touched our hearts and the hearts of millions. We join with our fellow citizens and millions around the world who pray for continued strength and wisdom as His Holiness leads the Catholic Church.

VATICAN CITY, APRIL 19, 2005 (Zenit.org).- German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, dean of the College of Cardinals, was elected Pope today, the second day of the conclave, and has taken the name Benedict XVI.

Here is a translation of his first greeting, which he gave from the balcony of the facade of St. Peter's Basilica.

After the great Pope, John Paul II, the Lord Cardinals have elected me, a simple, humble worker in the Lord's vineyard. I am consoled by the fact that the Lord is able to work and act with insufficient instruments and, above all, I rely on your prayers.

In the joy of the risen Lord, confident of his permanent help, let us go forward. The Lord will help us. Mary, his Most Holy Mother, is on our side. Thank you.

A Letter From Sen. Mitch McConnell To Sen. Harry Reid Dear Janet, I thought you would be interested in reading the letter below from Sen. McConnell of Kentucky to Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada. The vote on ending the filibuster of judicial nominees who are not liberal activist judges will be held next week. This will be, without doubt, one of the most important votes in our history. We are governed by three separate but equal branches of government. If only liberal activist judges are allowed to serve, then the judiciary will become the ruling body of our government and the legislative and executive branches will operate beneath the judiciary. I share this letter not because I do or do not support a particular party, but because it is important that the judiciary not become the most powerful branch of our government. I hope you have made plans to call your Senators next week. It could well be the most important two phone calls you have ever made to those Senators. You can reach both of your Senators at 202-224-3121. It will only cost you about 50 cents. No one asked me to send you this letter. While I certainly agree with your call to work together on the judicial nominations process, I am greatly concerned about your statement regarding shutting down Senate business and, by extension, the federal government. A government shut down would be rash and unwise, and the American people deserve better from us than such an act, which is surely inconsistent with "working together." I urge you to reconsider taking this action. We can all agree there is much important work to be done in the Senate. While our economy is strong, gas prices are way too high; people feel these costs every time they fill up at the pump. This Senate needs to enact a long-term energy policy to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. In addition, our transportation infrastructure needs improving. Millions of Americans take the roads and rails everyday to get to work and keep this country moving. It is thus critical that the Senate pass a highway bill. We also must reform America’s tax code so that it is fairer for all Americans and leads to a robust economy. We need to continue our efforts to reform Social Security so it is strong and secure for future generations. Rather than work with us in a spirit of bipartisan cooperation, the Democratic Caucus has indicated it will continue its blockade of circuit court nominees. Democrats’ continued insistence on obstructing judicial nominees threatens our Constitution’s careful separation of powers among the three branches of government. Never before in the history of the country has a minority of senators filibustered—on a systematic, repeated, and partisan basis—well-qualified judicial nominees. But in the last Congress, it occurred on ten different circuit court nominations within only sixteen months. Majority Leader Frist has repeatedly sought to afford your caucus generous time in which to debate these nominations. But he has been consistently rebuffed, including being told on one occasion that "there is not a number [of hours] in the universe that would be sufficient" to discuss a nominee. Nevertheless, Senator Frist continues his efforts to reach an accommodation. He has invited Democrats to come to the table and work with us to restore the 200-year-old norms and traditions of the Senate. Instead of shutting down the government, I urge you to work with the Majority Leader to repair our broken judicial confirmation process. Sincerely, Mitch McConnell

choose"? He exercised that right when he chose to have sex. "The best
interest of the child syndrome"? You obviously have no symptoms of that
unfortunate malady. "Women want men to pay for their mistakes"? I assume
you are suggesting the "mistake" was the mother of your grandchild?
No wonder there are so many angry feminists! Conservatives, if they
stand for anything, stand for personal responsibility as the bedrock
of liberty. Perhaps you should have addressed this letter, "Dear
Hillary"? What planet are you from? That's our "take on this subject."

After reading your article...I'm assuming it was yours, I just wanted to make a few comments and set the record straight.

We are thrilled at the prospect of candidates the caliber of Jane Abraham, David Brandon, Keith Butler, and Nasser Beydoun (and there may yet be others) exploring runs for US Senate from Michigan, and I can tell by the mood among our Democratic friends that this race worries them already. There's eighteen months until election day, and they're already at work criticizing Abraham and a recent survey that was commissioned by her Senate exploratory committee.

The story revealed by Abraham's survey, and other recently conducted studies, is that voters are keenly aware that under the guidance of Jennifer Granholm and Debbie Stabenow, Michigan was the only state in the union to lose jobs in 2004. The only state! Michigan is now the only state in the U.S. not to have rebounded from the post-9/11 recession, and Granholm and Stabenow have yet to offer solutions.

The recently published account of the Abraham survey seemed to cast doubt on the credibility of the firm and the pollster that conducted the research. In Wilson Research Strategies (WRS), Jane is working with a company that works for over 100 of the Fortune 500, represents over 120 members of Congress, has been involved in the past three Republican Presidential campaigns and has been tremendously effective electing Republicans around the nation. I have full confidence in Chris Wilson's ability to conduct research and analyze the data.

The Michigan Republican Party is serious about defeating Debbie Stabenow. President Bush and our party leaders in Washington are too. They believe, as I do, that the GOP will field a tremendous candidate, and that that candidate will be the next Senator from Michigan. Even more important, the people of Michigan are ready to replace Debbie Stabenow because they realize Michigan cannot afford six more years of skyrocketing unemployment, liberal tax hikes, and partisan obstructionist politics. And that, friends, is why Debbie Stabenow is vulnerable in 2006.

THE PRESIDENT: Laura and I join people across the Earth in mourning the passing of Pope John Paul II. The Catholic Church has lost its shepherd, the world has lost a champion of human freedom, and a good and faithful servant of God has been called home.

Pope John Paul II left the throne of St. Peter in the same way he ascended to it -- as a witness to the dignity of human life. In his native Poland, that witness launched a democratic revolution that swept Eastern Europe and changed the course of history. Throughout the West, John Paul's witness reminded us of our obligation to build a culture of life in which the strong protect the weak. And during the Pope's final years, his witness was made even more powerful by his daily courage in the face of illness and great suffering.

All Popes belong to the world, but Americans had special reason to love the man from Krakow. In his visits to our country, the Pope spoke of our "providential" Constitution, the self-evident truths about human dignity in our Declaration, and the "blessings of liberty" that follow from them. It is these truths, he said, that have led people all over the world to look to America with hope and respect.

Pope John Paul II was, himself, an inspiration to millions of Americans, and to so many more throughout the world. We will always remember the humble, wise and fearless priest who became one of history's great moral leaders. We're grateful to God for sending such a man, a son of Poland, who became the Bishop of Rome, and a hero for the ages

Jennifer Granholm plans to do anything to curb the continual loss of jobs
afflicting Michigan's families.

"It's a sad day for Michigan," said Anuzis. "We all want to see
Michigan be the beacon of opportunity it was just a few short years ago, but
Jennifer Granholm's job recession has put an end to that. Her inaction comes at
the cost of Michigan's hard-working men and women."

Jennifer Granholm today, with the Department of Labor and Economic Growth,
announced that Michigan's unemployment rate has risen to 7.5%, the highest rate
since 1992. Further, 22,000 more Michiganians lost their jobs, bringing the
total number of unemployed in Michigan to over 400,000. Granholm's failure to
grasp the enormity of the problem was on display as she proclaimed, "It's a
mixed bag on jobless numbers."

"A mixed bag?" continued Anuzis. "It's a garbage bag, and it's
time the Governor recognizes that. Michigan needs a leader, but unfortunately we
have Jennifer Granholm."

No, the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics says Michigan now is the undisputed national leader in joblessness. We're the market leader (in something, at least), which should enhance our play for new investment because we have so many extra workers.

In most cases, public talk and nostalgic hand-wringing focuses on what was. Or what should be. Or how changing the status quo isn't fair even if doing so only acknowledges the reality of what is.

What is it about the phrase "Michigan in crisis" that entrenched interests, the willfully ignorant and the eternally optimistic still don't get?

How is it that a governor with two degrees, including one from august Harvard, still thinks that shifting business taxes from manufacturers to service companies, increasing taxes on Detroit casinos and raising license fees, to name just a few examples, stimulates the economy?

It doesn't.

The national economy is booming, yet the state is not creating jobs. Michigan's personal income growth is stagnant. Many public bureaucracies - the state, counties, cities and schools -- are badly misaligned with the revenue they receive.

Forget "what should be." Focus on "what is."

The Terri Schiavo situation has brought a sad awareness to many of our fellow
citizens about how heartless the culture of death is. Please be assured that no
matter what happens in the next few days, we as a people of life will stand
together and will, in God's strength, turn back this tide of evil and destruction.
Many negotiations are still going on behind the scenes, and Priests for Life is
doing everything possible. Moreover, we are in discussion with other leaders
about plans for legislation that will prevent this kind of disaster from ever
happening again, not only by directly protecting the vulnerable, but also by
limiting the power of the courts.

Meanwhile, I would like to deliver your messages and good wishes in person to
Terri's parents Bob and Mary, to her brother Bobby, and to her sister Suzanne. If
you want to send them a greeting or a promise of prayers, just email

Breaking the Law

I have never broken the law. I have never been arrested.

Yet I often think of Bishop Austin Vaughan, auxiliary bishop of New York, who
in the last years of his life of faithful service to the Church, was arrested and
imprisoned many times for rescuing unborn babies. He saw what Christians were
doing across the country as they peacefully blocked the doors of abortion mills to
put their bodies between the babies and the instruments of death. Then one day he
looked at his episcopal ring, and realized that the three figures on it -- St. Peter, St.
Paul, and the Lord Jesus -- had all been arrested and imprisoned! He no longer
hesitated to do so too, if it was the price to pay for saving lives.

Human reason, Scripture, and history teach us that while we are called to be law-
abiding citizens, breaking the law is not always wrong. Take, for example,
someone who breaks down the door of a neighbor's apartment to put out a fire, or
jumps over a fence past the "no trespassing" sign into a neighbor's yard to save a
child drowning in a swimming pool. Those cases make it clear that saving life
takes precedence over laws the preserve less important values.

Lessons from Scripture abound. The apostles were given strict orders not to teach
in the name of Jesus (see Acts 4 and 5). Should they have obeyed? If they had, we
would not know the Gospel. Would we obey if that order were given to us? What
exactly would we say to the assembled crowd on Sunday morning if such a law
had been passed on Friday?

In Exodus, we read, "The king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives...'When you
help the Hebrew women in childbirth ... if it is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let
her live.' The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of
Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live" (Ex. 1:15-17). They disobeyed
the king's order because it conflicted with a higher law, God's command never to
kill the innocent. Daniel went to the lion's den because he disobeyed a law
prohibiting prayer (Daniel 6).

History shows us Christians martyred for disobeying Caesar, people rescuing
slaves, protecting Jews from the Holocaust, and resisting segregation -- all in
violation of the law but in support of justice. The list of examples fills many
volumes.

We risk failure if we ignore the lessons of history and the principles of Scripture.
It's easy to look back at those who broke the law in these cases and praise them.
But when the same challenges that they faced face us, we find it difficult to
acknowledge that sometimes the law must be broken. That's because now, the
sacrifices will be made by us.

I have never broken the law. I have never been arrested. But I simply cannot
guarantee that I never will.

Violando la Ley

Nunca he violado la Ley. Nunca me han arrestado.

Sin embargo, a menudo pienso en Monseñor Austin Vaughan, obispo auxiliar de
Nueva Cork, quien durante los últimos años de su vida de servicio fiel a la Iglesia,
fue arrestado y encarcelado varias veces por rescatar niños por nacer. Había visto
lo que hacían los cristianos a lo largo y a lo ancho del país cuando bloqueaban
pacíficamente el acceso a los abortuarios interponiendo sus cuerpos entre los
bebés y la muerte inminente. Un buen día miró su anillo episcopal y se dio cuenta
que las tres imágenes grabadas en él eran las de San Pedro, San Pablo y el Señor
Jesús. ¡Todos ellos habían sido arrestados y encarcelados! A partir de ese instante,
no dudó más en arriesgarse a que le sucediera lo mismo si ese era el precio que
debía pagar por salvar vidas.

La razón humana, la Sagrada Escritura y la historia nos enseñan que aunque
estamos llamados a ser ciudadanos respetuosos de la Ley, no siempre está mal
quebrantarla. Piensen, por ejemplo, en alguien que rompe la puerta de su vecino
para apagar un incendio, o salta sobre una cerca que tiene un cartel que dice
"prohibido pasar" para entrar al jardín del vecino y salvar un niño que está
ahogándose. Esos casos demuestran que salvar una vida tiene precedencia sobre
Leyes que preservan valores menos importantes.

En la Sagrada Escritura abundan los ejemplos. Los apóstoles recibieron órdenes
estrictas de no enseñar en nombre de Jesús. (Vean los capítulos 4 y 5 de los
Hechos de los Apóstoles). ¿Deberían haber obedecido? Si lo hubieran hecho, no
conoceríamos el Evangelio. ¿Obedeceríamos si nos dieran esa orden? ¿Qué le
diríamos a la asamblea reunida el domingo si se sancionara esa Ley el viernes?

En el libro del Exodo leemos que "el rey de Egipto dio también orden a las
parteras de las hebreas... "Cuando asistáis a las hebreas...si es niño hacedle
morir; si es niña dejadla con vida." Pero las parteras temían a Dios y no hicieron lo
que les había mandado el rey de Egipto, sino que dejaban con vida a los niños."
(Ex. 1:15-17) Desobedecieron la orden del rey porque estaba en conflicto con una
Ley superior: el mandamiento de Dios de no matar nunca al inocente. Daniel fue
a parar a la jaula del león porque desobedeció una Ley que prohibía rezar (Daniel
6).

La historia nos dice que los cristianos fueron martirizados por desobedecer al
César, hubo gente que rescató esclavos, protegió a judíos durante el Holocausto y
resistió la segregación, todo ello violando la Ley para promover la justicia. La lista
de ejemplos alcanzaría para llenar muchos tomos.

Nos arriesgamos a fracasar si ignoramos las lecciones de la historia y los
principios de la Escritura. Es fácil mirar atrás y reconocer a quienes violaron la

still has authority to end her life, or

impeachment, but as Jefferson noted, that's a "scarecrow" because few

must be refreshed..." and as Justice Joseph Story aptly reminded, the
Second Amendment is the "palladium of all other rights." That is why

With Last Court Defeat, Terri Schiavo's Family Out of Options
PINELLAS PARK, FL (LIFENEWS.COM) -- With a decision by the Florida
Supreme Court rejecting one last effort to head off Terri Schiavo's
painful starvation death, Terri's parents Bob and Mary Schindler are
virtually out of options to save their daughter. After receiving the
news that Florida's high court rejected an appeal seeking to halt the
starvation because Terri tried to say she wanted to live, the
Schindler family has gone into seclusion. Brother Paul O'Donnell, a
Franciscan monk who has been helping the Schindlers this week said
they would be granting no further interviews. The only remaining
legal options for the family rest with appeals filed by Bush's
attorneys seeking to overturn Greer's order against custody. The
appeals have been filed with the 2nd District Court of Appeal, which
has consistently ruled against the Schindlers and Governor Bush. The
Schindler family visited Terri on Saturday and attorney Barbara
Weller was with them. Weller told the Associated Press that Terri
cried when her mother hugged her. "She knows what's going on. She was
trying to vocalize something with Mary," Weller said. "Terri still
knows who her mother is, and she's extremely distressed," Weller
added. "She's not a vegetable who doesn't know what is happening."
Bob Schindler, Terri's father, said he appreciates the support from
the hundreds of pro-life and disability rights activists who have
been at their side during the week. He said he hopes they will
continue to be supportive in the coming days. "We want people to
continue to be here [at the hospice] with Terri, and with us," he

TERRI SCHIAVO\'S PARENTS HAVE FILED THIER LAST COURT APPEAL
WASHINGTON, DC (LIFENEWS.COM) -- Terri Schiavo's parents have filed
their last appeal of a court decision, accoring to an attorney for
Bob and Mary Schindler. The appeal, ironically, has to do with a
motion asking for her starvation death to be halted because she tried
to tell an attorney for the Schindlers that she wanted to live. The
appeal comes of a ruling handed down by Circuit Court Judge George
Greer, who decided Terri's comments were involuntary and simply
groans and muttering consistent with a patient in a persistent
vegetative state. "This is our last appeal," family attorney Barbara
Weller said. "We do have one more iron in the fire," she added, but
did not specify what that strategy included. George Felos, the
euthanasia advocate who is Michael's lead attorney, told CNN, "Any
fair observer would say that the legal struggle is over here." The
motion said Terri clearly demonstrated her desire not to be starved
to death when she tried to tell a family attorney she wanted to live.
But, Greer said the family failed to bring up Terri's statement in two
previous emergency hearings he held during the week. "What you're
seeing is a textbook example of judicial tyranny,'' Bob Schindler
told reporters. "They either find way or make a way. They have a
mindset to kill Terri.'' Schindler said Terri was "putting up a
tremendous battle to live." "She is fighting like hell to stay
alive," he said. "I want the powers that be to know that. It's not
too late to save her." Paul O'Donnell, a Franciscan monk who is
helping the family, said the Schindler family is tormented over
what's been happening this week and saddened at running out of legal
options. ''The anguish is really with Mary [Schindler],'' O'Donnell
said, according to Bloomberg News. "It is so hard for her. You see a
brave front when they come out here, but it's heart wrenching. Each

TERRI SCHIAVO\'S ESTRANGED HUSBAND DENIES HER FINAL COMMUNION
PINELLAS PARK, FL (LIFENEWS.COM) -- Terri Schiavo's estranged husband
Michael has denied Terri a final communion before she succumbs to a
painful starvation death. The decision has Terri's parents and family
in a state of shock. Responding for the Schindler family, Brother Paul
O'Donnell, a Franciscan monk who has been helping the family this past
week, said it was an affront to Terri and her Catholic beliefs. "Terri
Schiavo ... a practicing Roman Catholic all her life, has been denied
the precious body and blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ," O'Donnell
said. "This is in violation of her religious rights and freedoms and
allows the governor to  intervene," O'Donnell added. The
decision is important to Terri's family as it could be the last time
she has communion before she dies. No one knows if Terri could
swallow the communion bread and wine because Michael has not allowed
doctors to conduct swallowing tests to determine whether Terri could
eat or drink on her own. Even if she can't eat or drink, a very tiny
morsel of bread and a drop of wine would have been placed on her

PINELLAS PARK, FL (LIFENEWS.COM) -- Terri Schiavo doesn't have much
time left and as her medical condition worsens due to the starvation
and dehydration, her parents and an attorney for her estranged
husband disagree on whether she is suffering. "She's doing remarkably
well under the circumstances," Terri's father, Bob Schindler, told
reporters after visiting her inside the hospice Saturday afternoon.
"She has put up a tremendous battle to live. She's not throwing in
the towel." That said, Barbara Weller, an attorney for the
Schindlers, told Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends" that blood was
coming from Terry's eyes and tongue. "Her eyes are sunken and her
skin continues to flake off," Weller added. Terri looks so poor in
health now that Weller described her as resembling "an Auschwitz
victim." But George Felos, the euthanasia advocate who is Michael's
attorney, disagreed with Weller's characterization. He said Weller's
comments about bleeding were not true. "I will tell you that as it
appears to me, Mrs. Schiavo's death is not imminent by any means,"
George Felos told the Associated Press Saturday. "She is resting

PINELLAS PARK, FL (LIFENEWS.COM) -- Assuming Florida and federal
courts continue their rigid stance in favor of Terri Schiavo's
painful starvation death, the issue of visitation could be the next
legal battleground. Terri's estranged husband Michael and her parents
Bob and Mary Schindler have not spoken in years and they do not visit
Terri at Woodside Hospice at the same time. As Terri's legal
guardian, Michael controls which people are allowed to be placed on
an approved list of visitors. Michael has spent most of the time with
Terri this week and the Schindlers are permitted to visit from time to
time. A local shop owner across the street from the hospice has
allowed the Schindlers to turn his business into a waiting area with
couches for the Schindlers to relax and be close to Terri and the
media circus outside the hospice. With Terri close to death, the next
battle in the ongoing controversy could be who gets to be with Terri
if she dies. Hamden Baskin, one of Michael's attorneys, said the two
sides have no discussed who should be allow to be present with Terri
when she dies. However, he indicated Michael would likely be with
Terri. "He will be in a position to be with her in the end as he
should as her husband," Baskin said. "He's been very gracious to
extend the family a great deal of time with Terri. As the time draws
near, it does become a more difficult logistic situation. Michael has

TERRI SCHIAVO FRIEND: SHE OFTEN HAD BRUISES, TALKED DIVORCE
PINELLAS PARK, FL (LIFENEWS.COM) -- A friend of Terri Schiavo's says
the disabled woman frequently had bruises on her arms and legs prior
to her collapse in 1990. The comments lend further evidence to
allegations that Terri's estranged husband Michael abused her and
that those actions caused her current condition. "I did notice
bruises on her upper arms and upper legs," Jackie Rhodes told Fox
News Channel's Greta Van Susteren. The two worked together at an
insurance company's office. Rhodes said she wasn't phased at the time
by Terri's frequent bruising and attributed it to "maybe running into
the desk at work or, you know, maybe she was extra-sensitive." "But
now, hindsight tells me that I did see them quite frequently and that
they may have been more than just a bump into the desk," Rhodes
explained. "They were mostly bruises where normally they would be
covered up, you know, during the work day," she said. "They were
smaller bruises, like maybe someone had grabbed her or, you know,
like, squeezed her arm or leg really tight." In her Friday interview,
Rhodes revealed that Terri and her husband had a heated argument on
the evening prior to February 25, 1990, when Michael supposedly woke
up to find Terri unconscious in the hallway of the couple's St.
Petersburg home. Rhodes told Fox News that Terri called her in tears
after the fight and she confirmed other accounts of Terri saying she

On a side note:

For any readers who haven't figured it out yet, this blog will have a very strong slant towards the life issues, partially because it is something that the webmistress is very passionate about, and partially because I view it as a weak point for the Democrats.

I'm hoping to figure out how to set this up so I can assign entries into catigories, so one can easily sort out what they are particuarily interested in. This site still has a lot of growth left to do.

Has Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm hired Jacques Chirac as her new economic adviser?

Among the 50 states, Michigan ranks dead last in new jobs last year (losing 45,000), and near the bottom in income growth. So it's no surprise that Ms. Granholm is seeking a new formula for growth and prosperity. But the Democratic Governor is touting a new taxing scheme for Michigan that looks a lot like the industrial policy model of Old Europe, where economically omniscient governments try to pick business winners and losers -- and usually make a mess of it.

The "revenue neutral" tax plan would give tax breaks to Michigan's big three automakers and other heavy manufacturers, while shifting the burden to retailers, wholesalers, banks, insurance companies, professional services and thousands of small businesses. Some in Michigan are dubbing the Granholm Plan the shift-and-shaft tax policy. And that's why its political reception so far has been as frosty as a damp wintry breeze off Lake Michigan.

Ms. Granholm is right about the need to chop the corporate tax load in Michigan. The Tax Foundation reports that the state has the highest corporate tax burden in the nation, a fact that isn't helping General Motors as it copes with declining market share and fierce competition from the likes of Toyota. Hillsdale College economist Gary Wolfstram finds that, despite the high tax rates, Michigan was only one of two states to actually lose tax revenues in Fiscal Year 2004. The Midwestern state is a glittering example of how high tax rates can unbalance a state budget.

Compounding the problem is that Michigan is the only state to levy a de facto value added tax on its businesses. (That's another similarity to Old Europe.) Called the Single Business Tax (SBT), this levy is applied to production. This means that any company that loses money or just manages to break even still often pays a hefty sum to the tax man just for the privilege of operating in Michigan. Hence, many don't.

The Granholm plan would cut the business VAT tax rate and provide a personal property tax credit for manufacturers. If only she had stopped there. Instead, in deference to the gods of "revenue neutrality," her plan triples the tax on profits, doubles insurance taxes, and arguably violates Proposal A, the state's constitutionally required inflation cap, by effectively raising property tax assessments on commercial real estate.

Actually, her plan is a stealth tax hike because the tax base she uses was 2001 when revenues were severely depressed due to recession and the aftermath of 9/11. In non-recessionary times, the plan may in reality amount to a $100 million tax hike.

Pro-Life Society of Priests Announced by Fr. Pavone and Bishop Yanta

March 23, 2005, Amarillo, Texas. Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, officially announced today that he is
founding a pro-life community dedicated to the formation and training of priests, deacons, brothers and seminarians who will
devote themselves fully to the proclamation of the Gospel of Life. This initiative will be based in the diocese of Amarillo,
Texas, under the authority and stewardship of Bishop John W. Yanta.

"It has been a dream of mine for over a decade to form a community that can accept seminarians who want to devote their
entire ministry to the defense of the unborn," said Fr. Pavone. "While there are religious communities that give special
emphasis to the right to life, the Church has no institutional society of men whose exclusive focus is to protect innocent
human life from the tragedy of abortion and euthanasia. It is time for such a community. I am grateful to Bishop Yanta for
allowing me the opportunity to make this dream a reality."

Bishop Yanta, who has served on the Priests for Life Episcopal Board of Advisors since 1998, and who has been particularly
devoted to the pro-life cause throughout his priesthood, has already offered several buildings in his diocese that will serve as
the center for the new apostolate. "I am excited about supporting Fr. Pavone in venturing forth, with and through the Holy
Spirit, in the establishment of a Society of Apostolic Life for priests and seminarians dedicated to pro-life ministry - an
immense need at this time in history," said Bishop Yanta today. "The Lord has provided several vacant buildings that once
served as a Christian Brothers High School with boarding facilities, a chapel, gym, and spacious grounds. The Diocese of
Amarillo is happy to make these available (at no cost) to Priests for Life and the proposed Society of Apostolic Life."

This society of apostolic life, while drawing on the spirit and mission of the Priests for Life organization, will be a completely
separate entity, known as Missionaries of the Gospel of Life. Priests for Life will continue to exist as an association of the
Christian faithful under Canon Law, and Fr. Pavone will continue to serve as its National Director. In order to initiate the
historic formation of this pro-life community of priests, deacons, brothers and seminarians, Fr. Pavone has officially become a
priest of the Diocese of Amarillo, and will begin assembling a formation team for the community. Priests for Life is also in the
process of establishing a headquarters in the diocese, but will continue to maintain its current offices and staff in New York,
Washington D.C., Virginia, California, and Rome, Italy.

"This is a pivotal moment in time," said Fr. Pavone. "Throughout the history of the Church, God has intervened in times of
great moral crisis and has raised up within His Church the charisms necessary to address those crises. I have long been
convinced that God is raising up numerous disciples ready to devote their entire lives to ending the tragedy of abortion, which
the bishops have identified as the fundamental human rights issue of our day. I have no doubt that we will see a tremendous
and immediate response to this initiative."

Fr. Pavone announced that men considering joining this community can attend a discernment retreat he will conduct on June
24-26 in Amarillo. There will also be a seminarians pro-life conference in Newark, NJ from August 16-21, during which Fr.

Bishops from around the world praised the historic effort.

From Denver, Colorado, Archbishop Charles J. Chaput said: "Under Father Frank Pavones leadership, Priests for Life has
been a tireless and important national voice defending the sanctity of human life. In supporting Fr. Pavones new initiative,
Bishop Yanta and the people of the Diocese of Amarillo are offering a vital service to Catholics throughout the United States."

From St. Louis, Missouri, Archbishop Raymond L. Burke said: "I have received with great joy the news of the foundation of
a priestly society of apostolic life dedicated to the apostolate of the respect for human life. In every time period, the Holy Spirit
has inspired founders of institutes of the consecrated life and societies of apostolic life, so that the spiritual needs of the Church
and world might be more fully addressed. Surely, there is a great need in our time for a priestly society dedicated to the
conversion of our culture of death and the promotion of a civilization of life. The work of the Priests for Life and its National
Director, Father Frank Pavone, has surely prepared the way for the timely foundation of the priestly society of apostolic life. I
commend Bishop John W. Yanta for his pastoral vision and generosity in inviting Father Pavone to make the new foundation

From Phoenix, Arizona, Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted praised Priests for Life: "[This organization] has offered a courageous

At the invitation of the local diocese, or of individual parishes or pro-life groups on a national, state, or local level, Priests for

Paul was raised Jewish. He became a Christian and served for 22 years as a priest in the Anglican tradition. His pro-life
activism brought him all the way to the Supreme Court in the case Schenck vs. Pro-Choice network, which was decided in his
favor in 1997. In 2004, Paul was received into the Catholic Church by Fr. Frank Pavone.

Jim Pinto served as a priest in the Anglican Tradition for over 20 years and entered into full communion with the Roman
Catholic Church in 2003. He is recognized nationally as an advocate for the poor, for racial reconciliation, and for the right to
life.

The Speakers' Bureau also includes our Pastoral Associates Dr. Theresa Burke and her husband Kevin, Dr. Alveda King, the
niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and our Associate Director Janet Morana.

Terri Schiavo

[Note: By the time this newsletter goes to print, we do not know what Terri Schiavo's situation will be. Whatever it is, however,
her life provides a critical test for society -- a test we cannot afford to fail.]

She is not dying. She is not in a coma. She is not alone, but rather has loving parents and siblings ready to care for her for the
rest of her life. She has not requested death.

Yet a battle rages regarding whether Terri Schiavo should be starved. She has sustained brain injuries and cannot speak or eat
normally. Nevertheless, the only tube attached to her is a small, simple, painless feeding tube that provides her nourishment
directly to her digestive system.

Her legal guardian is her husband, who already has another woman -- by whom he also has children. He wants Terri's feeding
tube removed. Of course, he could simply allow her to be cared for by her parents and siblings, and get on with his life, but he
refuses.

On February 6, Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, visited Terri Schiavo for the second time, spoke with
her and prayed with her. He found her "wide awake, alert, aware, and responsive." At various times in the visit she tried to
vocalize responses, but otherwise communicated with her eyes and her smile, and by returning the kisses of her parents.

Terri is not dying. This is not a matter of "letting her go," because she isn't "going" anywhere. If, however, she is deprived of
nourishment, then she would slowly die in the same way that any of us would slowly die if we were deprived of nourishment.
It is called starvation.

If the courts permit that to happen, then why should that permission apply only in Terri's case? And where does the state get
the authority to starve people?

Judges

The Constitution of the United States places the responsibility for writing laws in the hands of elected lawmakers. These men
and women serve in the State legislatures and in the United States Congress. They are accountable to the voters who put them
into office and who can remove them from office. They are to represent the voters as they craft and pass legislation that
represents the will of the people.

Meanwhile, however, key aspects of public policy that contradict the will of the majority of Americans have, over the last
several decades, been imposed upon us by another branch of government, the Judiciary. Unelected Federal judges, who are not
accountable to voters and who serve for life, have given us policies that ban prayer and Bible-reading in public schools, that
allow abortion-on-demand throughout pregnancy, and that remove more and more moral boundaries to perverse sexual
behavior.

In the Elections of 2004, many voters made their choice for President and for their US Senators based on their view of the
proper role of judges, namely, to apply the law rather than write their own opinions into law. Now, the President and the US
Senate have a joint, solemn obligation to fill the many vacancies in the Federal judiciary. The President presents nominees; the
Senate votes to confirm them by a simple majority.

In the past four years, we have seen an unprecendented and unconstitutional effort by pro-abortion Democrats in the Senate to
block well-qualified nominees who enjoyed the support of the majority of the Senators. The blocking was done by filibuster --
that is, a technique of prolonging debate indefinitely, and hence preventing a final vote. The filibuster is a tool that can be used
to block legislation, but here it is being used to block judicial nominees. Meanwhile, many courts remain vacant. The motive
for these filibusters has been that many of these nominees are considered too religious and too pro-life.

Now the question is whether we will see the same behavior in this new Congress, especially with the prospect of Supreme
Court vacancies on the horizon, and whether the Senate will act to prevent the filibusters. Contact your US Senators and
demand that the Senate prevent the filibusters of judicial nominees. Tell your Senator you want to see an up-or-down vote on
each of the President's nominees, without anti-religious bias. If a Senator opposes a nominee of the President, then let the
Senator vote against that nominee. Let those who favor the nominee vote in favor. The point is, let there be a vote, and let the
process work like the Constitution says it should.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of one of the most important documents Pope John Paul II has ever written. "The Gospel
of Life" ("Evangelium Vitae") is an "encyclical letter" (meaning it is a letter of high authority sent around the world by the
Pope), and presents the Church's answer to the question, "Why is life good, why is it sacred, why should it be protected in
every circumstance?"

Priests for Life is preparing educational materials that you can use throughout the year to deepen your understanding of this

Gearing up for Commencement!

Over a million children per grade level throughout the nation would have been with us had they not been killed by abortion.
Over a million members of each graduating class this year have been legally destroyed. Priests for Life asks, therefore, that
each school yearbook and graduation ceremony include a remembrance of those who would have been graduating had they not
been aborted.

A sample entry in a school yearbook could say the following: "In prayerful remembrance of our fellow students who have been
lost from abortion...We do not condemn those who felt they had to do this; rather, we weep with them now...and we pray for
the day when the most frail and vulnerable lives will enjoy the same protections the rest of us do."

In the graduation ceremony, an empty chair or a lit candle, or a cap and diploma resting by themselves can stand as a reminder
of these students, and the words above can be spoken to explain the significance of these symbols.

Please, do something. How can we explain it if we forget or ignore these children?

Alveda King joins Priests for Life Staff

Dr. Alveda King, niece of Martin Luther King, Jr., has become a Pastoral Associate of Priests for Life. A pro-life advocate as
well as a civil rights advocate, Dr. King will head up the Priests for Life Office of African American Outreach. She will be
available for speaking engagements in parishes, schools, and pro-life events as a member of the Priests for Life Speakers
Bureau.

She also participates in the Silent No More Awareness Campaign (a project of Priests for Life and NOEL), through which she
speaks about her own two abortions and how the Lord Jesus Christ has brought her forgiveness and healing. Alveda has stood
with the Silent No More Awareness Campaign in Washington, DC and elsewhere at gatherings in which the women hold signs
that say "I Regret My Abortion."

On her website, KingForAmerica.com, Alveda declares that like her uncle, she too has a dream about equality. But she asks,
"How can the dream survive if we murder the children?"

HERE IS THE SYNOPSIS OF HIS SPEECH AND PLATFORM:

I would be delighted to speak at Aquinas. My standard "Rotary Club"
presentation highlights the plain historical fact that Republicans used to
be the environmental standard bearer, points out our great past leaders
(Teddy Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Nixon) and their conservation accomplishments.
Then, I move into why "Conservation is Conservative." I can also give a
religious--and maybe particularly Catholic--slant to conservation if the
audience is of the type that would accept those type of remarks. It is by no
means a long talk...20-30 minutes max. I could invite REP members in the
area to come, too, and we might accomplish much more by mingling.

Have you joined REP as a member yet? We are looking for a couple State
Executive Board members...we meet via telephone conference once a month for
about half an hour. Give it some thought...while I consider myself young at
45 years old, we could really use some active 20 somethings.

For background purposes, I am Senior Vice President of First National Bank
of Three Rivers, Vice Mayor of Sturgis, and President of the St. Joseph
County Economic Development Corporation. I am about as conservative as a
person can get!

Let me know if you have any dates or ideas in mind for the Aquinas
opportunity.

Working to Protect Terri -- UPDATE

Terri Schiavo, a disabled Florida woman, is not brain dead. She is not in a coma. She is not on life support. Her brain has been damaged and she needs to be fed to stay alive.

Early in the morning of March 21, the United States House of Representatives approved a bill already passed by the Senate to allow Terri's parents, Robert and Mary Schindler, to obtain a new federal court review of all the factual and legal issues that bear on Terri Schiavo's rights under the U.S. Constitution and federal law. President Bush immediately signed the bill into law. This law allowed the Schindlers to bring their case to save Terri's life to a federal court in Florida on March 21.

On March 22, U.S. District Court Judge James Whittemore refused to order the reinsertion of Terri Schiavo's feeding tube. Terri has now been without food since Friday, March 18.

Early on March 23, in a 2-1 ruling, a panel of the 11th Circuit Court in Atlanta denied the reinsertion of Terri's feeding tube. Terri's parents have vowed to take their case to the United States Supreme Court, which may or may not decide to make a decision on the case. Efforts are also underway in Florida to convince state senators to pass a bill that would require stronger evidence of informed consent before food and water are taken away from an incapacitated patient.
